Today, companies are not only complying with laws and regulations, but also creating their own standards for sustainable development. And it’s not only corporations— governments, institutions and individuals worldwide have begun to adapt a sense of environmental awareness and sustainability. What is sustainability?
Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development—which is considered the path to sustainability—is the simultaneous pursuit of economic prosperity, environmental quality and social equity. Our building owners and facility managers are concerned with being profitable, competitive and enhancing the value of your properties, while attracting and maintaining tenants. As environmental awareness is becoming more and more mainstream with your tenants and as employee health and comfort plays a more important role in site selection, environmental responsibility should be part of your every day business. Being environmentally responsible is also good for the bottom line. The building next door is LEED certified, what does that mean for you? Do you know how important sustainability is to your potential tenants and their employees? Maybe it is time to find out. Public and personal awareness of “greening the home & workplace” is not only in vogue, it is becoming a leading consideration for Americans when purchasing products and services. Being green is smart and responsible, and is becoming increasingly important for many decision makers. Ask yourself, is your building keeping pace with your tenants desire for a healthy and “greener” work place? Do your recycle? How long does it take you to fix that running faucet? How do you try to reduce your energy consumption? What does Green mean?
Green purchasing means purchasing environmentally preferable products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. This comparison may consider raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance or disposal of the product or service. In addition to purchasing environmentally responsible product, there are additional steps you can take to encourage environmentally responsible behavior. Ensure that products used in your building are recycled, and are separated from the regular waste steam. Encourage and practice responsible work place conservation: - Turn off lights and computers at night
- Fix leaking faucets
- Turn down thermostats at night,
- Recycle office paper, glass & plastics
